The sea otter is typically regarded as the cute, energetic, and fastidious animal that dines on shellfish while floating on its back. For us, they have become symbols of the very properties that they can sometimes exhibit—inquisitiveness, intelligence, and friendliness. In ancient times, they were revered for their ability to dive below the surface of the WATER and their pelts were used in initiation societies in various parts of the globe, from North America to Africa. Because their pelts became so desirable in more recent times, the otter has also become symbolic of endangered species and the movement to preserve endangered wildlife.
